As traditional belief considers sweeping house on the first few days of Lunar New Year to be a way of driving away “Thần Tài”, this action is avoided at all cost by Vietnamese people. They regard Thần Tài as the God of Luck who offers their families with financial fortunes in a New Year so the family would suffer from lots of financial difficulties if he is expelled. People often re-decorate their houses with tiny red ornaments, Tet’s flowers and trees as symbol of Tet. This is pretty similar to the way Western people’s houses are decorated with Christmas Tree on Christmas Eve.

Men, particularly the father in his family are usually in charge of cleaning ancestor altar while women in the family are busy with cleaning house or cooking. There is a strong spiritual relationship between alive people and deceased people in any Vietnamese heart; and to come back to this world when worshiped, ancestor altar is like a portal or home of them. Because of this, to show respect to ancestors, Vietnamese people clean ancestor altar. With the most fresh and clean water and sweeping tools, they do the work in the most careful and meticulous way.

Mam ngu qua (the five fruit tray) is an indispensible decoration for ancestor altar in Tet. Fire, Earth, Water, Metal and Wood, are five natural elements represented through five colors of five fruits. Each element is thought to cover a wish for the New Year like peace, healthiness and wealthy.
