Perhaps more than anywhere in Thailand, Ko Tarutao is a heaven for wildlife. Sea turtles, whales, monitor lizards, crab-eating macaques, mouse deer, and countless species of birds all call the island and its surrounding waters home. It is not the optimal place for snorkeling since the water is murky compared to the other Andaman Islands, but for most, the clean and expansive white sand beaches, diverse wildlife, waterfalls, caves, hiking and stunning views more than compensate. Because of being a national park, Koh Tarutao Island has been preserved in a natural state. There is no commercial development whatsoever, the stunning unspoiled island is unmarred by souvenir shops, travel agencies, resorts, restaurants, bars or any other privately owned businesses that have taken over many Thai Islands. A national park office, shop, restaurant, bungalows and campgrounds are the only human marks on the island. Most visitors are happy to trade luxury for pristine rainforest and mile after mile of untouched sand. Visit Ko Tarutao with Indochina tours Thailand

Of course, Tarutao was less hospital in those days, with impenetrable malarial-swamps and shark-infested waters to dissuade anyone thinking of swimming for the mainland.
