Mondulkiri, an ideal eco-tourism area in Cambodia
Mondulkiri, an eastern province of Cambodia, is chock full of natural beauty with the lush green rolling hills, thickly forested mountains and majestic waterfalls. Although being the largest province in Cambodia it is the most sparsely populated one in the entire country.
When you go to visit Mondulkiri, obviously one of the most spectacular towns here is Sen Monorom which is the attractive destination for travelers being passionate about exploration and adventure, because of the communities of hill tribe people who are not affected by mass-tourism, as they are in neighboring Thailand. Visiting Sen Monorom you will find deep pure jungle, with a huge variety of flora and fauna. Furthermore, a quite but beautiful town nestled into the green hills; it has potential a lot to develop into a center for non-intrusive eco-tourism. Today, it is undeveloped, giving visitors a feeling of going somewhere off the beaten tourist trail. The pine hill, as a stark example, is about 6km along highway 14 from Sen Monorum town. The hill is covered by green pine trees in which some of them have the expectancy of hundreds of years. In addition, the ground is also covered by fallen leaves as a yellow carpet. An interesting thing here, we should explore, is multi-culture and the variety of being used: Khmer, hill tribe languages, Vietnamese and Lao. 80 percent of the population in Mondulkiri is made up of ten tribal minorities, with the majority of them being the Chunchiet from the tribe of the Phnong.
Traveling here you can witness houses built in the typical Khmer architecture, specially find the traditional Phnong houses. In the houses you can find traditional gongs and big jars, whereby the last ones have existed more than a thousand years old. There are different sorts of gongs used for various occasions. Indigenous communities consider them as treasures which are symbolize traditional, spiritual and material terms.
