Ninh Binh – Halong 3 Days
4.4 8

Itinerary

This 3-day trip combines two of northern Vietnam’s best natural sites – Ninh Binh’s river caves and Halong Bay’s limestone islands. You’ll spend one day exploring Ninh Binh by boat, then transfer to Halong for an overnight cruise. It’s efficient if you’re short on time but still want both the “land” and “sea” versions of Vietnam’s karst landscapes. Transportation is private to Ninh Binh, then you’ll embark on Halong overnight cruise.

Ninh Binh involves rowing boats through cave systems and visiting ancient temples. The Halong cruise gives you a full day and night on the water with your own cabin, meals included, and optional kayaking. The pace is relaxed – mostly sitting on boats enjoying scenery. Good for travelers who want nature without much hiking.

Day 01: Hanoi - Ninh Binh - Tam Coc - Bai Dinh Pagoda

Embark on an enchanting journey from Hanoi to the captivating landscapes of Tam Coc and the spiritual grandeur of Bai Dinh Pagoda. Your adventure begins with a comfortable drive from Vietnam’s bustling capital, leaving behind the urban energy to discover the serene countryside that awaits.

Arrive in Tam Coc, a destination renowned for its stunning karst landscapes that rise majestically from emerald rice paddies, creating a scene often described as “Halong Bay on land.” Board a traditional sampan boat and settle in for a peaceful 2-hour journey along the Ngo Dong River. Your skilled local rower, often using their feet to paddle, guides you through a mesmerizing landscape of limestone cliffs, verdant rice fields, and hidden caves. Glide through three natural grottoes carved by the river over millennia, each offering a cool respite and a sense of timeless wonder.

Throughout the journey, witness the rhythms of rural life unfolding along the riverbanks – farmers tending their crops, water buffalo grazing peacefully, and local fishermen casting their nets. The ever-changing scenery varies with the seasons: vibrant green fields in spring, golden yellow hues during harvest, and the shimmering silver colors of water-filled paddies after planting.

After completing your boat trip and enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Bai Dinh Pagoda, Vietnam’s largest Buddhist complex and a site of immense spiritual significance. Marvel at its magnificent architecture spread across multiple levels of hillside terraces. The complex houses an impressive bronze Buddha statue standing 10 meters tall and weighing 100 tons, along with 500 Arhat statues, each carved with unique expressions and gestures. Wander through the grand halls, climb the steps for panoramic views, and absorb the serene atmosphere that makes this pilgrimage site so revered among Vietnamese Buddhists.

The evening concludes your day of cultural and spiritual exploration as you check into your hotel in Ninh Binh.

Day 02: Ninh Binh - Halong Bay

After breakfast at around 8:00 am, we’ll pick you up to embark on a scenic journey to the mesmerizing Halong Bay, one of Vietnam’s most iconic natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The approximately 3.5-hour drive takes you through the Red River Delta’s countryside, where you’ll pass verdant rice paddies, rural villages, and glimpses of daily Vietnamese life.

Upon arrival at the harbor, you are warmly welcomed aboard your premium cruise vessel and served a mouth-watering lunch while beginning your voyage through the bay’s legendary emerald waters. As you cruise, thousands of limestone islands and karsts rise dramatically from the sea, their shapes evoking dragons, sails, and mythical creatures that have inspired centuries of Vietnamese legends.

Depending on which cruise you select, your detailed itinerary will include a visit to an impressive karst cave adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years. You’ll have opportunities for kayaking to explore hidden lagoons and secret beaches (available as an extra option on most boats, though some cruises include kayaking), swimming in crystal-clear waters surrounded by towering limestone formations, and simply enjoying the magnificent landscape while relaxing on the sundeck with a refreshing drink in hand.

As the day progresses, watch the sun paint the karsts in golden hues before it dips below the horizon. The day will conclude with a sumptuous dinner on board featuring fresh seafood and Vietnamese specialties, followed by evening activities such as squid fishing or simply stargazing from the deck. You will spend the night gently rocked by the bay’s peaceful waters, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Following breakfast served on deck, you can participate in optional morning activities such as Tai Chi exercises with the bay’s stunning scenery as your backdrop, or simply relax and take in the views one final time. Then discover a breathtaking limestone grotto, exploring its fascinating rock formations and learning about the geological forces that created this magnificent bay over millions of years.
