Itinerary

This northeast 6 days tour combines remote mountain areas with Halong Bay, covering Ba Be Lake, Ban Gioc Waterfall near the Chinese border, and ending with an overnight cruise. It’s a good mix if you want both adventure and relaxation, but be prepared for long driving days on mountain roads.

Ba Be Lake and Ban Gioc areas see few tourists, so interactions feel genuine. After a few days in the mountains, the Halong cruise provides a break with proper amenities and seafood meals. If mountain homestays aren’t your style or you’d rather skip Lang Son, reach out via  this form or email [email protected] to design your trip.

  • Ban Gioc Waterfall – See Vietnam’s largest waterfall on the China border, take a bamboo raft ride
  • Lang Son – Stop at the border town and Dong Dang market (optional, can adjust route)
  • Halong Bay – Overnight cruise with private cabin, kayaking, cave visits, and onboard meals

DAY 01: HANOI - BA BE LAKE

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, at 7:30 am our guide and driver will pick you up to embark on a scenic 250-kilometer journey northward to Ba Be National Park, one of Vietnam’s most pristine and ecologically significant protected areas. This comprehensive national park encompasses Vietnam’s largest natural lake, surrounded by towering limestone mountains, pristine forests, and fascinating cave systems.

The drive itself offers a rewarding introduction to Northern Vietnam’s countryside, taking you through the Red River Delta before climbing into increasingly mountainous terrain. Along the way, you’ll pass verdant rice paddies, rural villages where life moves at a gentler pace, and forested hillsides that hint at the natural beauty awaiting you.

Lunch will be served at a local restaurant en route, offering authentic regional flavors and a chance to stretch your legs before continuing the journey. As you approach Ba Be National Park, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with limestone peaks rising sharply from the valleys and dense forest covering the slopes.

Ba Be National Park represents one of Vietnam’s most biodiverse regions, home to numerous bird species, rare mammals, and pristine ecosystems. The park shelters not only natural wonders but also several ethnic minority communities, including the Tay, Red Dao, and H’mong people, who have lived in harmony with this environment for centuries.

Upon arrival at the park, your first stop is Hua Ma cave, a massive grotto adorned with thousands of intricate stalactites hanging from the ceiling like ancient chandeliers. Walk through this impressive underground chamber, marveling at the spectacular rock formations that nature has sculpted over millions of years. The cave extends deep into the mountain, with passages revealing ever-more dramatic geological features.

After your cave exploration, check into your unique accommodation for the night – a traditional Tay stilt house belonging to a local family. These elevated wooden structures, built using traditional techniques passed down through generations, offer a genuine cultural experience. Spend the remainder of the afternoon enjoying free time to walk around the peaceful village, breathe the fresh mountain air, interact with welcoming locals, and absorb the tranquil atmosphere of this remote mountain paradise far from city life.

As evening falls, join your host family for dinner featuring home-cooked Tay cuisine prepared with ingredients from their garden and the surrounding forests. This homestay experience provides intimate insights into the traditional lifestyle, customs, and warm hospitality of the Tay ethnic people.

Amazing Ba Be Lake

DAY 02: BA BE TREKKING & BOATING

After breakfast prepared by your host family, follow your experienced guide on an invigorating trek through the mountains surrounding Ba Be Lake. The trail takes you through pristine forest, across mountain streams, and up hillsides that offer increasingly spectacular views of the lake and surrounding peaks.

This trek provides wonderful opportunities to encounter several ethnic minority villages belonging to the Tay, Dao, and H’mong communities. Each group maintains distinct cultural traditions, architectural styles, and traditional dress. As you pass through these remote settlements, you’ll gain fascinating insights into their unique customs, agricultural practices adapted to the challenging mountain terrain, and the close relationship these people maintain with their natural environment. The friendly villagers often wave and smile as trekkers pass, and your guide can facilitate brief interactions and cultural exchanges.

Pause for a rest and enjoy lunch at a scenic spot before the afternoon’s highlight activity. Board a traditional wooden boat for a leisurely cruise along the Nang River, which feeds into Ba Be Lake. This peaceful journey allows you to fully appreciate the area’s natural beauty from a different perspective – gliding across mirror-calm waters reflecting towering limestone cliffs, passing through narrow gorges where vegetation hangs over the water, and observing birds fishing along the shoreline.

Your boat trip includes several memorable stops. Navigate through Puong Grotto, a remarkable cave tunnel that the river has carved through a limestone mountain. As you drift through this natural passage, look up to see bats clinging to the ceiling and listen to the echo of water dripping in the darkness. Continue to the rapids of Dau Dang Waterfall, where the river rushes over and around massive boulders, creating white water and a constant roar. Finally, visit tiny Widow Island, a small rocky outcrop in the middle of the lake with an interesting local legend attached to it.

These poetic landscapes, combining the serenity of still water with the drama of limestone karsts and rushing rapids, create a truly memorable experience that showcases the natural diversity of Ba Be National Park. Return to your homestay for another evening with the Tay family, enjoying dinner and perhaps sharing stories or simply relaxing on the elevated platform of the traditional house.

Marvelous Cao Bang

DAY 03: BA BE- CAO BANG - BAN GIOC WATERFALL

After breakfast, bid farewell to your host family and Ba Be Lake as you embark on a journey deeper into Cao Bang province toward the Chinese border. Today’s drive takes you through some of Northeast Vietnam’s most remote and scenic countryside, following winding mountain roads that offer spectacular views at every turn.

Your route leads to Trung Khanh, a district lying directly on Vietnam’s border with China. Here you’ll visit the village of Phuoc Sen, a mountainous settlement renowned for its traditional blacksmith craft that has been practiced here for centuries. The Nung ethnic minority people of this village have passed down their metalworking skills through countless generations, creating farming tools, knives, and other implements using techniques that remain largely unchanged.

Watch skilled craftsmen at work, heating metal in traditional forges, hammering it into shape on worn anvils, and creating products that are still essential to rural mountain life. Learn about the fascinating history of this village and the important role blacksmithing has played in the local economy and culture. The rhythmic clanging of hammers on metal echoes through the village, providing a soundtrack to this glimpse into traditional craftsmanship.

After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, continue your journey toward Ban Gioc area. The peaceful and poetic landscape along this route captivates with its beauty – endless terraced rice paddies cascade down hillsides in geometric patterns, traditional houses dot the landscape like scattered jewels, and farming families work their fields using water buffalo and hand tools. The scenery changes with the seasons, from the vibrant greens of growing rice to the golden yellows of harvest time, ensuring your camera stays busy throughout the drive.

Finally, arrive at Ban Gioc waterfall, the magnificent natural wonder on the Vietnam-China border. This is the fourth-largest international waterfall in the world, and the sight is truly breathtaking. Water thunders over a 30-meter-high, 200-meter-wide limestone precipice, creating a spectacular curtain of white foam surrounded by lush vegetation. The roar of falling water fills the air, and mist creates ethereal rainbows when sunlight hits the spray.

Spend time relaxing by this natural wonder, walking along viewing platforms that offer different perspectives, taking countless photographs, and simply absorbing the power and beauty of this massive waterfall. For those seeking a more intimate encounter, you have the opportunity to take an optional bamboo raft ride close to the base of the falls, where you’ll feel the power of the water and experience the cooling spray on your face.

DAY 04: BAN GIOC - NGUOM NGAO CAVE - LANG SON

After breakfast, drive approximately one hour to Nguom Ngao Cave, one of the most beautiful and impressive caves in all of Northeast Vietnam. The cave name translates as “Cave of Tigers” in the Tay language, named for the tigers that once sought shelter here.

Enter this magnificent underground world and follow well-lit pathways through a series of spectacular chambers connected by passages both wide and narrow. The cave system extends for several kilometers through the mountain, though visitors typically explore a section of about 1 kilometer that showcases the most dramatic formations.

Small paths wind between countless beautiful and uniquely shaped stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years. Some resemble frozen waterfalls, others look like forest of stone trees, and many create patterns that excite the imagination and inspire creative names. The cave’s most impressive feature is a massive chamber with a ceiling so high it disappears into darkness above. Local lighting dramatically illuminates the most spectacular formations, casting mysterious shadows and creating an otherworldly atmosphere that feels almost sacred.

After emerging from the cool darkness of the cave back into tropical sunshine, return to your vehicle and begin the transfer to Lang Son province. This journey takes you through yet more beautiful countryside, allowing you to watch daily rural life unfold – farmers tending their fields, buffalo grazing on hillsides, children walking home from school, and villagers going about their timeless routines.

Upon arrival in Lang Son, visit To Thi Mountain, a site imbued with local legend and religious significance. The mountain received its name from a touching story in Vietnamese folklore, and today features several Buddhist shrines and temples built into the rocky slopes. Climb the steps for panoramic views across Lang Son city and the surrounding countryside.

The tranquil of Local life

DAY 05: LANG SON - HALONG BAY

After breakfast at around 7:15 am, depart Lang Son and embark on a scenic journey eastward to Halong Bay, one of Vietnam’s most iconic destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The drive takes approximately 3.5-4 hours, carrying you from the mountains back toward the coast and offering a final opportunity to observe Northern Vietnam’s diverse landscapes.

As you approach the Gulf of Tonkin, the scenery transforms from mountains to flat delta plains before reaching the coastal waters where thousands of limestone islands rise dramatically from the emerald sea. Upon arrival at the harbor, you’ll be warmly welcomed aboard your premium cruise vessel.

As the boat casts off and begins gliding through the bay’s legendary waters, enjoy a mouth-watering lunch featuring fresh seafood and Vietnamese specialties served in the dining room. Settle into your private cabin, then head up to the sundeck to begin taking in the spectacular scenery unfolding around you.

Halong Bay contains approximately 1,600 limestone islands and karsts rising from the sea, their shapes evoking dragons, sails, fighting cocks, and other figures that have inspired Vietnamese legends for centuries. The name “Halong” translates to “descending dragon,” referring to the myth of a dragon family that descended from heaven to help the Vietnamese people defend against invaders by creating this maze of islands.

Depending on which cruise you’ve selected, your afternoon itinerary will include various activities designed to help you experience the bay’s wonders. Typical options include visiting Sung Sot Cave (Surprising Cave), one of the bay’s largest and most impressive grottoes, where you’ll climb steps to explore caverns adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years.

You may also have opportunities for kayaking to explore hidden lagoons and secret beaches surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, swimming in the crystal-clear emerald waters (weather permitting), or simply relaxing on the sundeck with a refreshing drink while watching the ever-changing seascape drift past.

As the sun begins its descent, watch the sky transform through shades of orange, pink, and purple, painting the limestone karsts in golden light before they fade to silhouettes against the twilight. The day concludes with a sumptuous dinner on board featuring fresh seafood, Vietnamese cuisine, and perhaps some international dishes. After dinner, you might participate in evening activities such as squid fishing from the deck, watching a movie, or simply stargazing from the top deck while anchored in a protected bay.
