Itinerary

This 5-day Central Vietnam tour focuses on two UNESCO sites which are Hue and Hoi An. You’ll spend 2 nights in each city with quality hotels, private transportation, and a relaxed schedule that includes beach time. Good for travelers who want history and culture but also time to unwind by the water. The central coast has milder weather than the north, making it comfortable year-round.

Hue shows you Vietnam’s imperial past with palaces, tombs, and the citadel from the Nguyen Dynasty. Hoi An is completely different, a preserved trading port with lantern-lit streets, tailor shops, and nearby beaches. The drive between them crosses Hai Van Pass with mountain and ocean views. Activities are easy walks through historic sites, some cycling if you want, and beach relaxation. Need more beach days or want to add cooking classes in Hoi An? Let us know via this form or email [email protected] to design your trip.

Day 01: Hue Arrival

Welcome to Hue, a quiet and charming city steeped in rich imperial history. This is where Vietnam’s last royal dynasty, the Nguyen Dynasty, flourished and ultimately came to an end, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of palaces, tombs, and cultural traditions that continue to captivate visitors today.

Upon arrival at Phu Bai International Airport, our driver will be waiting to greet you warmly and transfer you to your hotel in the heart of this historic city. Check in to your comfortable accommodation and take time to settle in after your journey. The rest of the day is yours to spend at leisure – perhaps take a gentle stroll along the Perfume River’s banks, explore the neighborhood surrounding your hotel, or simply relax and prepare for the adventures that await.

Day 02: Hue city tour

Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel before embarking on a journey of discovery with our knowledgeable local guide. Today you’ll explore the captivating charms of the Imperial City, the heart of this former Imperial City that served as Vietnam’s capital from 1802 to 1945. Wander through the remarkably well-preserved royal monuments, grand throne rooms, and peaceful courtyards that tell the story of the Nguyen emperors who once ruled from these very halls.

Experience the stunning beauty of Hue as you board a traditional dragon boat to cruise along the tranquil Perfume River, named for the fragrant flowers that fall into its waters each autumn. Your journey takes you to Thien Mu Pagoda, standing majestically on a hillside overlooking the river. This seven-story octagonal tower, built in 1601, represents one of Vietnam’s most ancient and historically significant Buddhist sites. Observe local religious practices, admire the impressive architecture, and hear the compelling stories associated with this iconic landmark.

After enjoying lunch served at an authentic local restaurant where you can sample Hue’s distinctive imperial-style cuisine, continue your cultural exploration with a visit to Tu Duc’s tomb. This is perhaps the most famous and poetic of all the royal mausoleums, set amidst a pine forest beside a tranquil lotus pond. The emperor himself designed this elaborate complex as both a working palace during his lifetime and his final resting place, creating a harmonious blend of architecture and natural beauty.

Conclude your day at Hue’s bustling Dong Ba Market, the city’s largest and most vibrant marketplace. Wander through the colorful stalls piled high with fresh produce, aromatic herbs, conical hats, silk garments, and countless other goods. This is an excellent opportunity to observe daily life, interact with friendly vendors, and perhaps pick up some authentic souvenirs or local snacks.

Day 03: Hue - Hoi An

Following your exploration of the ancient Imperial City, your journey continues southward to the equally enchanting ancient trading port of Hoi An. This morning, after breakfast, embark on a rewarding drive through the spectacular scenery of Ocean Cloud Mountain Pass, more commonly known as Hai Van pass.

This dramatic coastal route, considered one of Vietnam’s most scenic drives, climbs sharply from sea level to over 500 meters, offering breathtaking panoramic views where emerald mountains plunge into the sapphire South China Sea. Stop at viewpoints to capture photographs of the stunning vistas and feel the refreshing mountain breeze. This pass has historically served as a natural boundary between the climates and cultures of Vietnam’s north and south.

Upon reaching Da Nang, Vietnam’s fourth-largest city and a rapidly developing coastal hub, you have two excellent options to choose from based on your interests:

Option A: Visit the iconic Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills, where giant stone hands appear to cradle a golden walkway suspended high in the mountains, creating one of Vietnam’s most photographed and Instagram-worthy attractions. The French-colonial-style hill station offers cooler mountain air and stunning views.

Option B: Explore the Cham Museum, housing the world’s finest collection of Cham sculpture and artifacts from the ancient Champa Kingdom, followed by a visit to the Marble Mountains, a cluster of five limestone hills honoring the five elements. Climb stone steps to explore Buddhist sanctuaries, caves adorned with shrines, and enjoy panoramic views of Da Nang’s coastline.

After your chosen stop and lunch at a local restaurant, continue to the well-preserved town of Hoi An. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and enjoy free time at leisure. You might choose to wander the atmospheric ancient quarter as lanterns begin to glow at dusk, transforming the town into a magical dreamscape.

Day 04: Hoi An walking tour

This morning, after breakfast, embark on an enchanting half-day walking adventure through the picturesque streets of this remarkably preserved 16th-century trading port. Hoi An represents a living museum where buildings showcase an extraordinary blend of Chinese, Japanese, French, and Vietnamese architectural styles, reflecting the diverse merchants who once conducted business in this prosperous port.

Your guided walking tour takes you through the town’s most significant landmarks. Visit the ornate Chinese Assembly Halls, built by merchant guilds from different regions of China, each featuring intricate carvings, colorful tiles, and altars honoring protective deities. Cross the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge, constructed in 1593 by the Japanese community and adorned with detailed carvings of monkeys and dogs. This elegant structure has become Hoi An’s most recognizable symbol.

Continue to the beautiful Phuc Kien Pagoda, also known as the Fujian Assembly Hall, with its stunning architecture and elaborate gates guarded by mythical creatures. Finally, explore Tan Ky House, a remarkably preserved merchant’s home that has remained in the same family for seven generations. The house’s architecture beautifully demonstrates the fusion of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese influences, with its dark timbered interior, carved columns, and hanging lanterns.

The afternoon offers you precious free time to explore Hoi An at your own pace. The town is renowned for its skilled tailors who can create custom clothing within 24-48 hours, its art galleries featuring contemporary Vietnamese artists, and its charming riverside cafes perfect for people-watching. You might also choose to cycle to nearby An Bang Beach for some seaside relaxation, take a cooking class to learn Vietnamese culinary secrets, or simply wander the lantern-lit streets as evening falls.
