Best Places to Visit in Vietnam in December – What do you need to know before going?

December is one of the most rewarding months to visit Vietnam, as long as you pick the right region. The north is cool and mostly dry, the central coast is still drying out after the autumn rains, and the south is warm, sunny and ideal for beaches. Add Christmas and New Year celebrations, and it’s easy to see why many travelers plan their Vietnam tours around this month.

This guide covers the weather in each region, where to go, what to expect over the festive period, and what to pack.

How is Vietnam Weather in December?

Vietnam stretches over 1,600 km from north to south, so December feels like three different months depending on where you are.

Northern Vietnam

Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Sapa and Ha Giang are in winter mode. Expect mostly dry days, cool mornings and evenings, and daytime temperatures that are comfortable for walking around cities and countryside. In Hanoi, it is typically mild in the afternoon and chilly at night, so a jacket is a must.

Mist and low cloud are common, which gives places like Ninh Binh and Halong Bay a moody, atmospheric look but can reduce visibility. In the mountains, Sapa and Ha Giang are much colder, with near-freezing nights and occasional frost. Trekking is possible, but pack proper layers and expect foggy views on some days.

Central Vietnam

Hue, Hoi An and Da Nang are in transition. Rainfall drops through the month, but early December can still bring heavy showers, storms and even flooding in low-lying areas like Hoi An’s old town. Hue is generally wetter than Hoi An. Temperatures are cooler than the rest of the year, but not cold.

The practical approach is to stay flexible. Build in a spare day, choose hotels with a few indoor things to do nearby, and carry a light rain jacket. Conditions usually improve as the month goes on.

Southern Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, Mui Ne and Phu Quoc are in the heart of the dry season: blue skies, low rainfall and warm temperatures without the intense humidity of the wet season. City sightseeing is comfortable, the sea is generally calm, and December is prime time for beach holidays on Phu Quoc.

From cool north to warm south, December lets you enjoy every region in one trip, as long as you pack layers and stay flexible in the center.

Early vs. Late December

Early December means a higher chance of rain in the central region, but fewer crowds and lower prices. Late December brings more reliable weather but peak demand, festive supplements and the earliest sellouts. If your dates are flexible, the first two weeks are good value in the north and south, while the second half is safer for central Vietnam.

Is December a Good Time to Visit Vietnam?

Yes, for most travelers. It just helps to know the trade-offs.

Why Visit in December

  • Much of the country is in its dry season, with sunny days in the south and dry conditions in the north
  • Northern temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing, unlike the heat of summer
  • Southern beaches are at their best
  • Christmas and New Year add a festive atmosphere to the cities and resorts
  • It’s an easy month to combine regions in one trip

What Are the Downsides?

  • Central Vietnam can still be wet, especially early in the month
  • The northern mountains can be cold and foggy
  • Halong Bay may be hazy rather than crystal clear
  • Christmas and New Year are peak season, so prices rise in popular beach destinations
  • Many hotels and resorts require a compulsory festive dinner on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and some enforce minimum stays

Best Places to Visit in Vietnam in December

Here are some of the best destinations to visit in Vietnam during December:

Hanoi & Ninh Binh

Cool weather makes Hanoi ideal for walking: the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Temple of Literature, and plenty of street food. Around Christmas, Hang Ma Street fills with decorations, and the city has a lively festive feel. Ninh Binh, about two hours south, is beautiful in cool weather for boat trips through the Trang An and Tam Coc karst landscapes and for cycling among the rice fields. Bring a jacket for early mornings.

Halong Bay Winter Cruise

An overnight cruise in December is a cozy, atmospheric experience. Days are cool and often misty, and skies can be hazy, so treat a clear-blue-sky photo as a bonus rather than a guarantee. Many cruise operators run themed Christmas and New Year’s Eve dinners, which suit couples and honeymooners. Pack a warm layer for the deck at night, and book early for festive dates.

Hoi An, Hue & Da Nang

Hoi An is the most charming of the three, with its lantern-lit old town, tailors and cafes. Hue is the place for imperial history, though it tends to be the wettest of the three. Da Nang combines city and coast. Expect a mix of sun and showers, and keep your plans flexible. Spend a day in Hue’s citadel and tombs when it’s dry, and save Hoi An’s cooking classes or spa treatments for wet spells.

Dalat

Set in the Central Highlands, Dalat is cool and dry in December, known for its “four seasons in a day”: misty mornings, sunny midday, cool afternoons and cold nights. It’s a good pick for flower gardens, pine forests, cafes and countryside drives, with a laid-back Christmas atmosphere. It suits couples, families and anyone who wants a break from the heat without going as far north as Sapa.

Ho Chi Minh City & Mekong Delta

Warm and dry, this pairing works well as a base for a southern trip. In Ho Chi Minh City, cover the War Remnants Museum, Ben Thanh Market and the Cu Chi Tunnels, and eat your way through the city. Then head to the Mekong Delta for boat rides, floating markets and village life. Two to three days for the city and one to two for the Delta is a comfortable balance.

Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is the clearest December beach choice. The dry season brings calm seas, sunshine and good conditions for snorkeling and island-hopping. It’s also a popular spot for Christmas and New Year, so expect resort-style celebrations and higher demand. Book early, check minimum-stay rules, and consider staying at least four nights to make the trip worthwhile. It suits couples, families and anyone wanting a relaxed beach finish to a Vietnam trip.

Best Beaches in Vietnam in December

Beach destinationDecember conditionsBest for
Phu QuocGenerally favorable, calm seasBeach holiday, couples, resorts
Con DaoGenerally favorable, can be windyNature, quiet beaches, diving
Mui NeWarm and relatively dry, windyBeach + dunes + kitesurfing
Nha TrangMore variableBeach city, activities, families

Phu Quoc: Sao Beach has powdery white sand, Long Beach suits sunset walks, and Ong Lang is calm and romantic.

Con Dao: Remote and quiet, with minimal development and good snorkeling and diving. Dam Trau Beach is known for its rocky scenery.

Mui Ne: Famous for its red and white sand dunes and fishing village at sunrise. The windy season makes it a top kitesurfing spot.

Nha Trang: A full beach city with island-hopping to Hon Mun and Hon Tam. December can bring showers and rougher seas, so it’s a less reliable choice than Phu Quoc.

Cost & Crowded

December is considered the peak tourist season in Vietnam, especially during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Here are some notices for you:

  1. Vietnamese have a national holiday for a couple of days at the beginning of the year so they tend to come back home to gather with their family. It means that it is less crowded fewer vehicles, and fewer people in the big cities such as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh. And also more crowded in the beach cities such as Da Nang, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, etc. as there are still some people who like to travel during this vacation with their friends and family.
  2. Many Phu Quoc hotels & resorts offer a long-stay promotion rate (for example stay 4 nights pay 3 nights), and many more travelers would love to be here. Also, there are some resorts that only accept bookings with at least 3 nights stay.
  3. Almost all the hotels require a fee for the compulsory dinner/party on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. It generally starts from US$70-80 per adult, children under 10 years old can have a discount of 50%. So make sure to ask the hotel about this.
  4. Book the table in your favorite local restaurant in advance or ask your travel agent to do it since all famous ones can be sold out quite soon, especially for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Christmas & New Year in Vietnam

Christmas isn’t a public holiday, but it is widely celebrated in cities and tourist areas. Hanoi’s Old Quarter and Ho Chi Minh City’s downtown are decorated with lights and trees, cathedrals draw crowds on Christmas Eve, and hotels and restaurants put on festive menus. Hoi An adds a softer touch, with lanterns and seasonal decorations along the river.

Where to Spend New Year

  • Hanoi: Countdown events around Hoan Kiem Lake and a lively street atmosphere
  • Ho Chi Minh City: Big fireworks, rooftop bars and crowds along Nguyen Hue Walking Street
  • Phu Quoc: Beach parties and resort gala dinners
  • Halong Bay cruise: A quieter, more intimate celebration on board

Christmas & New Year Booking Tips

  • Book early. Cruises, beach resorts and popular restaurants sell out first, especially for December 24 and 31.
  • Check festive dinner policies. Most hotels require a set dinner on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, charged per person, often with a child discount. Ask for the price before you book.
  • Watch for minimum stays. Some Phu Quoc resorts require three nights or more, and some offer long-stay deals.
  • Expect a seasonal premium. Prices rise most for beach resorts, Halong Bay cruises, peak-date flights and festive supplements. Accommodation and tours in cities see smaller increases, and prices are usually lower in the first half of the month.
  • Plan for Tet. Lunar New Year 2027 falls on February 6, so if you’re traveling then, December is a good time to book flights and hotels.
  • Keep central Vietnam flexible. Build in spare days, or consider private transfers when moving between regions so a weather delay doesn’t derail the trip.

Note that Vietnamese families often travel home for the New Year holiday, so big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City can feel quieter, while beach destinations get busier.
